Lyon v Bordeaux 16/11/08 (21:00 cet)

This is the biggest match of the weekend in ligue 1 where champions Lyon entertain pretenders Bordeaux. At the moment, the hosts sit top of the table, although there are a few teams snapping away at their heels.

Claude Puel’s men haven’t been at their best in the last few weeks and have only been scrapping out victories, often struggling to score goals. In midweek, they suffered a massive shock defeat at home to Metz in the Coupe de la Ligue, a result which amazed everyone.

This certainly wasn’t a priority competition for Les Gones, but nevertheless, the team that they fielded was still expected to do a professional job. Bordeaux are into the next round though thanks to a 4-2 success against Guingamp.

Les Girondins are within striking distance of their opponents at the top of the table, but a defeat in this game would leave them 9 points adrift. So it’s a really important match which they cant afford to lose, although it’ll be difficult for them to obtain any points.

Usually, Lyon ‘raise’ their game in this sort of match, so I expect the hosts to play close to their best football. Bordeaux are a decent team, but there are definitely still some doubts about them on the road.
