Watford v Sheffield Wednesday

Kick Off 7.45pm

Live on Sky Sports 1

Watford kicked off the season brightly but form has dropped which has seen them drop into mid division. However a gritty 1-0 win at Middlesbrough last weekend shows that the Hornets have it in them. Their next match was a midweek trip to winless Ipswich and for 92 minutes it looked like Watford were going to be the first side this season to lose to the Tractor Boys. Whistles were already being blown by the home fans when Nathan Ellington got a dramatic equaliser to take a share of the points. Watford have enjoyed more success on the road this season than they have at home, with 12 of their current 18 points coming from wins at Forest, Plymouth and Middlesbrough with their solitary home win being against Barnsley.  Watford will have to check on Tom Cleverley, the on loan youngster who was their match winner at Boro. Captain Jay DeMerit remains out but Nathan Ellington could start after his goal last Tuesday.

Wednesday’s record on paper this season isn’t too impressive, but four of their five defeats have been against the likes of Sheffield Utd, Newcastle and Middlesbrough and most recently, a 2-1 reverse to Preston in midweek.  The Preston defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for Brian Laws as he saw his side dominate the first half without much to show for it. Wednesday had 13 shots, 8 on target and managed to hit the woodwork no less than 3 times in a frustrating first period but were made to pay by Preston’s winning goal just before the hour.  Law’s will give late fitness tests to three key players, Richard Wood, Marcus Tudgay and Etienne Esajas.

At first glance, these do look like 2 sides on a par with each other, but when you look at the quality of opposition they’ve faced, Wednesday have had a much tougher time of it having faced a bunch of top third sides, whereas a Watford side with a horrendous home record , with the exception of the Middlesbrough win, have only beaten teams that were in the bottom half at the time. Wednesday, who are creative outfit, and are rarely involved in a dull game are definitely the value in this match at 3.35.
